Do They Know It’s Halloween?

You know those Band Aid-style groups of musicians who perform together to raise awareness for some sort of charity? Well, here’s another one…this time in the name of Halloween! This all-star smorgasbord of artists consists of Arcade Fire! Karen O! Rilo Kiley! Wolf Parade! Beck! Feist! David Cross! Nardwuar the Human Serviette!. Oh, and a few weird looking sock puppets.

Scariest Illustrations Ever!

I remember the stories from Alvin Schwartz book “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” being pretty creepy, but it was the terrifying illustrations in this book that scared crap out of me. I remember not even wanting to open certain pages for fear that I might bring those unsettling images with me into my dreams at night. My brothers would tease me by showing me the scary girl without eyes page. AAAAHHH! I guess I should thank Stephen Gammell the illustrator for these lasting visions of the macabre. Thanks Stephen!

Just check out some of the images from the book below:

You’d scream like that too if you had a hole in your arm?

It was eventual that someone would try to put some sugar on one and eat it. And that someone was candy maker William W. Kolb who produced his first batch of candied apples in 1908. It didn’t take long for these delicious treats to show up in carnivals, circuses, and candy shops throughout the nation. Continue reading

The Kingdom of Witches

Kingdom of the Witches

I must credit a fellow Halloween blogger, The Spooky Vegan, for showing me this beautifully haunting video, The Kingdom of Witches. The music is by Nox Arcana and its based on the silhouette art of Jan Pienkowski. It is just an example of how creative people can get and that there is nothing more powerful than the imagination in one’s own mind. Jan Pienkowski won the 1980 Kate Greenaway Medal for his pop-up book, Haunted House, which I do intend to purchase.
