Well its out… this year’s Martha Stewart Halloween magazine! It has become a tradition of mine to riffle through the magazine while I’m standing in line at my local grocery store. Every year I find so many cool ideas in it, I wind up throwing a copy into my basket. That wickedly talented staff at Martha Stewart gathers the most clever recipes, decorations and Halloween ideas and packages them all into a wonderfully designed magazine. And once again, this years edition does not disappoint. Spoiler..the theme this year is B-Movie Madness, a tribute to the classic low budget horror flicks we all know and love. I remember the stories from Alvin Schwartz book “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” being pretty creepy, but it was the terrifying illustrations in this book that scared crap out of me. I remember not even wanting to open certain pages for fear that I might bring those unsettling images with me into my dreams at night. My brothers would tease me by showing me the scary girl without eyes page. AAAAHHH! I guess I should thank Stephen Gammell the illustrator for these lasting visions of the macabre. Thanks Stephen!

I must credit a fellow Halloween blogger, The Spooky Vegan, for showing me this beautifully haunting video, The Kingdom of Witches. The music is by Nox Arcana and its based on the silhouette art of Jan Pienkowski. It is just an example of how creative people can get and that there is nothing more powerful than the imagination in one’s own mind. Jan Pienkowski won the 1980 Kate Greenaway Medal for his pop-up book, Haunted House, which I do intend to purchase.
