So I’ve made it a goal of mine to visit at least one new Halloween event, haunted house, or yard haunt each October. This Sunday I was waiting to order food at Porto’s Bakery in Burbank and decided to do a search for Halloween events in the area. There were several results, but I decided to visit a free yard haunt named Boney Island in Sherman Oaks, only a few minutes drive from where I had been scarfing down Cuban food. I was a little nervous on the drive over thinking that maybe I’d be the only one there gawking at someone’s private residence. Boy was I wrong! The streets were filled with people walking to the most obvious Halloween house on the block. The theme at Boney Island is skeletons which is immediately evident from the giant skull and sign that acts as the entrance to the yard haunt. As I entered the yard, I realized this was much more than a haunt with static props, but a full on show with music, lighting, presentation and ingenious special effects. The pictures below and short video will give you a sense of the level of detail used in the creation of Boney Island, truly one of coolest yard haunts I have seen so far. Continue reading

Halloween Travel Destinations
October is a great time of year to travel, wouldn’t you agree? I mean, the leaves are turning beautiful colors, the weather is starting to cool off, and kids are back in school which means NO MORE CROWDS! It is the perfect time to get away so I’m going to do just that. For the next few days I’ll be exploring the city of New Orleans. I’ve read about so many interesting things to do and I doubt I’ll have time to do them all. But here are a few items on my must do list:
- Take a voodoo tour.
- Visit the spooky New Orleans cemeteries.
- Explore the swamps and bayous in a small boat.
- Stroll down Pirate’s Alley.
- Check out the mansion of author Anne Rice.
I’m hoping to do these things and more! I’ll be posting updates while I’m in New Orleans so stay tuned. As I was making this list, I began thinking of other creepy travel destinations I’d like to travel to. I also thought of some creepy places I’ve already been that you guys might like to visit someday. So I’ve put this Halloween travel bucket list together to get us inspired to travel like the Halloween enthusiasts we are. Continue reading
Ghost Stories By The Fireside
What makes a group fire the perfect setting for ghost stories? It may be Halloween (or any fall holiday party for that matter) where guests gather around the fireplace. Everyone gets cozy and warm and waits for the storyteller to spin tales of fear and terror. If it’s summertime, the beach bonfire or campground fire pit is where these stories begin. The warmth from the fire is what causes people to gather, but time after time the setting will evoke someone to start bringing up stories of ghouls and ghosts. I think in general people are fascinated by tales of mystery. This probably goes all the way back to the days of the cavemen. They probably tried in those early days to tell stories around the fire. (That’s assuming they all understood what was being grunted of course.) During the middle ages, elders gathered their families by firesides and told tales of heroism and magic, capturing the imaginations of everyone who listened. If we take a look at holidays of the Victorian era, its easy to see how telling ghost stories around the fireplace was an important tradition. This is even reflected in the classic Christmas song “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”. The lyrics are “There’ll be scary ghost stories, and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago”. It almost always happened at the Christmas Eve celebration. People would gather and try to outdo each other with the scariest tale. Charles Dickens tale “A Christmas Carol” is now probably the most famous of those wintertime ghost stories. Fortunately the summertime fireside ghost story time is alive and doing well. But unfortunately it seems the tradition of Christmas ghost story telling by the fireside has dwindled during the last century. Maybe because not everyone has fireplaces in their homes anymore. Or maybe everyone is too wrapped up in the stress of gift giving. I think this Christmas Eve I will try to bring the tradition back. After all what better way to enjoy chestnuts roasting by the open fire.
Walkers Have Taken Over Universal Studios
It’s no secret that the Walking Dead is a hit show for AMC and Universal Studios is jumping all over the bandwagon with this year’s Universal Horror Nights. Never before have I seen so many “walkers” (formerly known as zombies) roaming around a theme park. That’s right, I visited the park’s annual Halloween event last weekend and was quite surprised by all the attention to The Walking Dead TV show. These walkers were scary, had great makeup, and snarled just like the ones on TV. But then again, if anyone can do monsters right, it’s Universal. After all they have the most classic horror monsters of all time remember?…Dracula, Frankenstein, & The Wolfman. Here’s my review of the mazes, monsters, and decor this year with some pretty awesome pics too. Continue reading
Son of Monsterpalooza Convention 2013
Burbank, Ca is quickly becoming my favorite destination for all things creepy. Last weekend I attended Southern California’s semi-annual monster convention called Son of Monsterpalooza. Sounds like the title of a good B-horror flick doesn’t it? This event is full of creativity and imagination and good scares all for the purpose of the celebration of horror monsters. And for a monster enthusiast such as myself, what event could be better? Continue reading
