Don’t know what to do with that Target Gift Card you got for Christmas? I’ve got a suggestion. Mosey on down to the toy section and grab yourself a 3-pack or 12-pack of S.L.U.G Zombies. (S.L.U.G. stands for Scary Little Ugly Guys and boy are they ever!) I discovered these awesome little green zombies while combing through the toy aisle looking for Christmas gift ideas. I noticed the coffin shaped packaging and snatched one up. The front of the package shows one zombie and the back side showed all the zombies in that set. Apparently there are four sets! I was intrigued by how intricately detailed the design for each zombie is. Each zombie is unique and based on something from pop culture. For example Andrew Agony is a zombified tennis player based on former tennis star Andre Agassi. How about Grave Lincoln, a zombified version of Mr. Lincoln himself.
When I first started to discover how cool these toys were, I was immediately reminded of the M.U.S.C.L.E.S. toy figurines of the 80’s. Those also had incredible detail in their design and each was a unique wrestling character. I remember kids bringing them to school, trading them in the playground, and wrestling them against each other. Unfortunately although the newer zombie figures seem even cooler, they apparently are not getting enough sales. Therefore the manufacturer may not continue the series and have already discounted the toys at most Target stores. I picked up each 12-pack for around 6 bucks, about 50% off their original price. I suppose kids today are so attached to electronic consoles they don’t play with toys anymore. A bit sad, but then again I’m finding out that the people who are buying these are adults that love the genre and 80’s toy nostalgia anyway.
I grabbed series two, three and four 12-packs, but there were no first series to be found. So looks like I’m on the hunt. Also, the zombies are a solid bright green color. The few human characters are a solid flesh tone color so it’s easy to separate from their undead friends. I think with a little paint, these characters would pop so much more. I did a little research and found that indeed, collectors are applying a little acrylic paint and some clearcoat to bring the zombies to life (so to speak). Gives you a chance to get a little creative with your zombies. I think when I paint mine, I’ll leave the original green skin color alone and only paint the clothes and accessories. Anyhow, once I finish the paint I’ll show you all the results (good or bad). Anyhow, get your very own zombies while they are still available!
